GARDENING TIPS TO AVOID WEEDS IN THE LAWN |
|
|
- Avoid weedy topsoil when starting or rebuilding a lawn. Some weed seeds are almost inevitable, but a check of where the soil comes from may help you to lessen this problem.
- Use good-quality grass seed. Inexpensive seed is likely to contain weed seeds and annual grass seeds. The annual grass will grow for one year, but won't come up the second year, and thus will leave lots of space for weeds.
- Sow grass thickly, according to instructions.
- Do not cut the lawn too short. A rule of thumb is to cut one third the length of the grass. For example, let it grow to three inches, then cut off one inch.
- After the lawn is established, water only when the ground is dry, then soak it thoroughly. Frequent, light watering is a relaxing evening pastime, but it encourages shallow grass roots and the growth of crabgrass.
- Keep grass cut so that weeds do not have a chance to go to seed.

Recipe of the Week: Texas Ranch Potato Salad |
 |
| What
You'll Need:
- 5 pounds unpeeled red potatoes
- 1 (1 ounce) package ranch dressing mix
- 2 cups mayonnaise
- 3/4 cup chopped green onion
- 1 pound bacon slices
|
|
Step by Step: |
|
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add whole potatoes, and cook until tender, 15 to 20 minutes.
Drain, run under cold water to cool, and chop into 1 inch cubes. Transfer to a large serving bowl and refrigerate until completely chilled, about 2 hours.
In a small bowl, stir together the ranch dressing mix, mayonnaise and green onion. Cover, and refrigerate for about 2 hours to blend flavors.
Wrap bacon in paper towels and place on a plate. Cook in the microwave until crisp, about 15 minutes, depending on the power of your microwave. Cool.
Stir the mayonnaise mixture into the bowl of potatoes. Crumble bacon into the bowl, and stir to distribute. Serve.
Yield:
16 servings
