Spring
brings hope and rebirth to our gardens but it can also be a very stressful
time for those of us trying to organize our garden chores without wearing
ourselves out. A few tips to remember:
-
Make a list of everything that needs to get done
in your garden and rank the chores by importance.
-
Split your chores into geographical sections of the
garden and stay focused on that area until everything has been achieved.
For example, instead of trying to weed, fertilize, water and mulch
your entire garden, do small sections at a time.
-
Make sure you have the proper tools on hand. This
will make your time in the garden easier and more efficient.
-
Finally, don’t get caught up in what needs to
be accomplished in the next day or week. Focus on the task at hand,
take a deep breath, relax and enjoy your time in the garden.

Rhododendrons come in many shapes and sizes from medium to very large,
with some growing to 5' while others may reach 20' or more. They bloom
in spring and early summer and range in color from white to the deepest
reds. They are an incredibly useful shrub and work well where there
is dappled sun and the soil is rich in organic matter.
Oaks and pines are the most commonly mentioned companions for this
beautiful shrub. The mulch provided by oak and pine trees breaks down
and provides nutrients. Rhododendrons require only a few conditions
in order to thrive: excellent drainage, a soil pH between 4.5 and 6.0,
and protection from hot afternoon sun. Adding a coarse-textured organic
material to poorly drained clay soils will increase drainage ability.
Rhododendrons need very little pruning. Each spring remove the dead
wood or any branches which were damaged over the previous winter. For
aesthetic reasons, wait until after they have flowered.
These versatile shrubs are quite low maintenance once they become established.
In most cases keeping the soil adequately conditioned with organic matter
is sufficient to provide the shrubs their nutrients and to provide you
with the beauty and versatility this plant provides.
